Rally Behind Trout Creek: A Chance to Save a Community’s Heart

Nestled in the heart of Northern Ontario, Trout Creek is a quaint town located just 30 minutes south of North Bay and 45 minutes north of Huntsville. Blink while driving along Highway 11, and you might miss it—but those who call Trout Creek home know it’s more than just a dot on the map. At the core of this close-knit community stands the Trout Creek Community Centre, a cherished gathering place that embodies the spirit and passion of small-town life.

For generations, the Trout Creek Community Centre has been more than just an arena—it’s been the heart of the town. From the Trout Creek Men’s League, which sees seven teams face off every Friday and Sunday, to the Old-Timers hockey games every Tuesday and Friday, this arena has been the backdrop of countless memories. It’s also home to the annual Trout Creek Family Hockey Carnival, where families unite to compete on the ice and celebrate the game they love.

Now, this beloved landmark faces an uncertain future. After engineers inspected the arena just before Christmas 2024, they uncovered a critical issue: the support beam structures are failing. Without a permanent fix, the arena faces the possibility of closure during heavy snowfall, as the temporary beams currently in place may not provide a long-term solution.

Enter Kraft Hockeyville

For those unfamiliar, Kraft Hockeyville is an annual competition that grants one deserving community $250,000 in arena upgrades and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to host an NHL® pre-season game. This year, Trout Creek has been nominated, thanks to the efforts of local resident Travis Tennant. Now, the community has an opportunity to rally behind this nomination to secure a brighter future for its beloved arena.

Why It Matters

For four generations, the Trout Creek Community Centre has been a second home to families, friends, and hockey enthusiasts. It’s where memories are made, friendships are forged, and a shared love for hockey brings everyone together. Losing this arena would be a devastating blow to the community.

This is more than just a competition—it’s a chance to preserve the lifeblood of a small town and give future generations the same opportunities to create lasting memories. By supporting Trout Creek’s Kraft Hockeyville nomination, you’re not just helping to save an arena; you’re helping to save a piece of what makes Trout Creek special.

I rented the arena on a few occasions for my child’s Birthday Parties. The arena was so accommodating to give us an area for the kids to have cake etc. after spending time on the ice skating. The parents of the children attending the party would also stay and enjoy the time skating.

Along with many, my most cherished memory is getting married at the Trout Creek community centre. Both my husband and I have deep family roots there and decided to move back so our boys can grow up in a community that is centred around families, friendships and support

Although I have just recently moved to the area, I lived in the small town of Barry’s Bay, and throughout my childhood experiences at “The Rink” I can truly relate to life in a small town around the Hockey Rink.

As with all communities in Canada, the ” Hockey Rink” is unquestionably the lifeblood to all that live in small towns. As it is Trout Creek’s (and Area), only real main attraction and gathering place, the importance of keeping this “home away from home” cannot be understated.

The “Rink” is a place where life’s memories and lessons are made. It is here where friends and family gather, where friendly competitions inspire life long memories, where laughter, joy, and some disappointments happen. Without the “Rink” in small communities none of these experiences and fond memories would echo in the winds of of each and every small town in Canada.
