Trade Talks Heating Up Between Leafs and Flyers Over Scott Laughton
As the NHL Trade Deadline approaches, the Toronto Maple Leafs are once again active in trade discussions, looking to bolster both their forward depth and defensive structure. Among the latest names linked to Toronto is Scott Laughton of the Philadelphia Flyers, with reports indicating that talks between the two teams are intensifying.

Why Laughton? A Versatile Two-Way Forward
Laughton, 30, hails from Oakville, Ontario, and has spent his entire NHL career with the Flyers since being drafted 20th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft.
While he’s never been a high-end offensive player, he brings value in his versatility, ability to play all three forward positions, and a strong two-way game—a trait that head coach Craig Berube would certainly appreciate.
💡 Laughton’s 2024-25 stats:
🏒 53 games
⚡ 10 goals, 25 points
📈 Career-high of 43 points in a season
What makes Laughton appealing to the Leafs is his ability to solidify the team’s third-line center role, which has been a clear weakness behind Auston Matthews and John Tavares. Adding Laughton would balance the Leafs’ forward depth, allowing the coaching staff to spread out scoring threats across three lines.
On top of that, Laughton is under contract for another two years at $3 million AAV, making him a more sustainable addition rather than just a short-term rental.
The Flyers’ Asking Price: A Potential Roadblock?
Philadelphia values Laughton highly, and for good reason. He’s a reliable third-line center, can jump into the top six if needed, and excels in defensive situations—something that playoff teams covet.
Just a month ago, reports suggested that the Flyers were demanding a first-round pick in any trade discussions for Laughton. That presents an issue for Toronto, as the Leafs no longer own their 2025 first-round pick.
If this turns into a bidding war with other contending teams, Toronto will need to decide whether Laughton is worth parting with significant assets to bring him into the fold.
What’s Next?
With the NHL Trade Deadline fast approaching, this situation could develop quickly.
Toronto has also been linked to Dylan Cozens of the Buffalo Sabres, meaning that GM Brad Treliving is actively exploring ways to improve the Leafs’ center depth. Whether Laughton becomes the guy or the Leafs pivot to another target remains to be seen.
The Leafs are in action Saturday night against the Vancouver Canucks, looking to complete a perfect 4-0 road trip before the 4 Nations Cup break.
Could this be the last game before Toronto makes a significant roster move?
Stay tuned.
