Matt Murray Makes Strong Case for Leafs’ Third Goalie Spot

Former two-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Murray is making headlines once again as he puts in a compelling bid to reclaim a spot in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ goaltending depth chart. The 30-year-old netminder delivered a stellar performance over the weekend with the Toronto Marlies, posting back-to-back shutouts against the Manitoba Moose, the AHL affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets.

Murray, once a regular NHL starter, has seen his career hampered by injuries in recent years. However, his recent form suggests he may still have plenty to offer. Signed to a one-year, $875,000 contract with the Leafs during the offseason, Murray is proving to be a valuable asset in the organization.

Dominating the AHL

Following his shutout heroics, Murray has improved to a 7-4-2 record with the Marlies this season. His impressive .933 save percentage ranks second in the entire AHL, showcasing his ability to dominate at the minor league level.

These numbers reflect a resurgence for the veteran goaltender, who appears determined to work his way back into NHL consideration

The Leafs’ Goalie Depth Dilemma

Currently, Denis Hildeby holds the Leafs’ third-string goalie position and is slated to start tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Hildeby’s performance has been solid, but with Murray’s recent form, the battle for the third-string spot may be heating up

For Toronto, having depth in net is crucial as they aim to contend for the Stanley Cup. While Hildeby has shown promise, Murray’s experience and ability to perform under pressure could provide the Leafs with an invaluable safety net.

What’s Next?

Murray’s strong showing with the Marlies is turning heads, and if he continues this level of play, the Leafs may have a difficult decision to make regarding their goaltending hierarchy. Whether or not Murray earns the third-string spot, his performance this season proves that he’s not done making an impact in professional hockey.

Could Matt Murray’s resurgence culminate in a return to the NHL spotlight? Time will tell, but for now, he’s giving the Leafs every reason to take notice.
